Hi Justin!

I hope you have a great time away from work, and that you enjoy the party and the Mardi Gras parade in Louisiana! Remember to stay safe!

All is well here. I'm wrapping up the preliminary design set for a wild building in downtown Chicago, scheduled to open in mid '07. In my "spare" time I'm working on some other projects, and trying to catch a few moments to explore LA.

I kept hearing about the "Farmer's Market" next to CBS that is supposedly a fixture of LA. From the name- "Farmer's Market", I figured that it was an open-air event where farmers would gather from the surrounding country to sell their crops, and give the attending cityfolk a sampling of farm-fresh quality.

So the weekend before last, I drove out there planning to buy a few ears of corn and whatever other crops caught my eye.

Climbing down from the parking garage, the place couldn't be a more perfect antithesis of its name! There was open air- directly above- and nothing but walls of department stores- and nothing else- on every side!

The place was flooded with women there to buy dresses and shoes and perfume. And I was in the middle of the plaza in a daze trying to find the corn!

After searching and searching, I finally found an outdoor stand surrounded by open wooden barrels. It looked like there was cotton candy in them- which isn't exactly a farm-fresh crop- but at least it's food. So I approached closer- and the crates were filled with- powdered soap! Soap!

Almost by chance I eventually stumbled across an alleyway in the very back of the market that appeared to be certain route to the restrooms, and there- in the middle of a makeshift basement between scattered steel supporting 5 stories of the latest fashions- was a dimly-lit plaza where people were eating corn dogs, pizza, funnel cakes, and all of the taste-laden fare associated with a open-air fair! So it wasn't a complete fiasco.

I had a meatball sandwich for lunch, and then left for the grocery store. To buy some corn.

So that's what's been up here. I've officially checked off "Avoid Farmer's Market for farm-fresh corn" from my LA to-do list!

Mardi Gras is a HUGE party that basically lasts for a long time. Theres huge parades, and lots of nitelife. Theres a street in New Orleans called Bourbon Street... hence the name, is a street full of bars. Thats what i'm talkin about!!! Mostly people go to Mardi Gras to get trashed, and experience the celebration... which I'm not sure of what the celebrate. Aparently you have a bunch of bead necklaces, and if you throw them to a girl they have to flash you or something... I dont know anything about all that craziness!!! But anyway, I'll start drinking on the plane, and probably wont quit till I get back to Atlanta... thats just what people do there. Now, I'm sure Justin wont be doing all that, because it seems like he has class, but me on the other hand... I'll be on holiday, so I'm just gonna cut loose and have some fun with my friends. Unfortunately New Orleans is not a safe city. They have the highest murder rate in the states... lots of people I know have been mugged and robbed down there, so I am going to be very cautious! As should you be too Justin if you read this. I'll try and take some pictures and post them for people to see.

OH NOOOO!!!! LOLOL Tuesday the 9th IS Fat Tuesday... LOL, I thought that was some specific float Justin was going to be on, so I was gonna look for that particular one while watching the parade. I'm so dumb! if you want more information go to www.mardigras.com. (http://www.mardigras.com.) Thats like the official state of louisiana's page for the festival. kinda interesting.

that bad luck! I'm from Ecuador and would wish to be there.

Comet2404
02-01-2005, 09:06 PM
Well I'll put it this way, from what I've heard about New Orleans, there are much better places to go than there.... but I've never been before, so I thought I'd go check it out. I called mom and dad today and told them I was goin, and Dad (who is a very cool dad) was even concerned about me going, saying it was unsafe and stuff.... and he let me go to europe alone!!!! Just curious... has ANYONE ever been to Atlanta?????

Oh, and is it really bad luck to wish someone happy birthday BEFORE their b-day? I've never heard that before!

Comet2404
02-02-2005, 03:39 PM
Delta??? Ugh... I hate them. It stands for "Dont Ever Leave The Airport." I made the mistake of using a buddy pass I had to go to Miami 2 weeks ago. It was awful, so I threw away my other half of the ticket (which aparantley I can still use to go anywhere else for like 25 bucks) and I bought my ticket back on AirTran. I dont fly Delta, and American Airlines (for obvious reasons... their crash rate is too high.) Although I think I read somewhere that you live in New Hampshire?? Well if thats the case you'd probably be pretty limited on who to fly with right? I've never been so I dont know!

Mardi Gras is on Tuesday February 8th.

Comet2404
02-02-2005, 07:15 PM
Well, its an ongoing celebration. Technically from what I understand, Fat Tuesday (the 8th) is the end of the celebration. It started off as a religious celebration, from the catholic church I believe. This weekend will be the biggest of the celebrations though. I'm heading down on Saturday through Wednesday, maybe sunday-wednesday. It depends when I can get a flight out. I fly standby... X-Fares on AirTran. If your 18-23, you can fly for like 64 bucks each way including taxes. But yea, I've never had an issue with NWA, but I dont like to fly them from Atlanta cause they bring in these ratty old DC-9s from the 60's. Those scare me!!!!

Jessica28
02-02-2005, 08:06 PM
