We Will Dance

Salem~June 2015

“Will are you really sure about going through with this?” Sami asked her son anxiously while he continued cramming various objects from around his bedroom into a cardboard box labeled Will’s stuff.

“Mom, is it absolutely necessary for us to have this same conversation again?” Will stopped what he was doing and turned to face his mother, “Trust me; I know what I’m doing.”

“It’s not a matter of trust,” Sami began to explain, the concern for her son evident by the tone of her voice that she was using with him, “rather one of wanting you be certain beyond a shadow of a doubt of the decision you are making.”

“Because the decisions I make today could affect me for the rest of my life,” Will mimicked one of the phrases his mother had told him many times during his growing up years as best he could, although his attempt at trying to lighten the mood by joking was certainly not appreciated by his mother gathering from the look on her face.

“I’m trying to be serious with you,” Sami placed her hands and her hips, ready to go another round with Will if need be to make him understand the ramifications of what he was about to undertake.

“Mom, I love you, but you have to let me live my life the way I see fit,” Will pulled his mother into a tight hug and rested his chin on the top of her head. Sami relented and enjoyed the hug her son gave her since his displays of emotion towards her were too few and far in between for her liking.

Two weeks later:

Sami stared at her reflection in the mirror after applying a light layer of lipstick onto her lips that finished off the makeup job she had done on herself. She ran her hands down her dress to make sure no wrinkles were on the aquamarine colored garment she was wearing and decided she had stalled long enough in the dressing room. She knew she couldn’t delay the inevitable and walked out the door to face the music so to speak.

“There you are,” Lucas said giving Sami a wry grin as he extended his elbow out for her to escort her to her seat, “for a few minutes I was wondering if you were even going to show up for your own son’s wedding.”

“I wouldn’t let Will down like that,” Sami replied sharply, reluctantly placing her arm in Lucas’ so he could seat her on the groom’s side of the chapel.

“You know Will getting married isn’t the end of the world,” Lucas said softly to Sami as they walked together down the aisle.

“It feels like it to me,” Sami sighed, and then resigned to plaster a huge smile on her face like this was the happiest day of her entire life. She wouldn’t give her family that was in attendance for Will’s wedding any ammunition against her by trying to accuse of her ruining her son’s wedding day.

Sami sat through the entire wedding ceremony determined not to cry as she listened to her child pledge to love his bride for the rest of their lives. In all honesty, the wedding was beautiful; there was no denying her son loved Jana York and had ever since they had first met their freshman year at college.

Well as weddings went in Salem, this one was surprising going off without a hitch so far, no hysterical revelations happening before or during the ceremony, a feat few weddings in this town could lay claim to. Sami surmised that luckily Will had not inherited her bad wedding karma like she feared he would. God knew she’d had enough of ruined weddings to last her for a lifetime.

“You may kiss the bride,” the reverend spoke to Will and Jana after they had completed saying their vows to one another, bringing Sami out of the reverie she had lost herself in during most of the ceremony.

The wedding reception was in full swing, while Sami did her best to avoid her relatives as much as she could, she had chosen to watch the festivities from a corner of the room until she heard Lucas’ voice.

“They’re playing our song,” he said, extending his hand to her to pull her out on the dance floor.

Knowing she couldn’t say no to Lucas without causing a stir, she took his hand and they began to dance with one another.

I’ve watched the sun rise in your eyes
And I’ve seen the tears fall like the rain
You’ve seen me fight so brave and strong
You’ve held my hand when I’m afraid

“You’ve been hiding from me today,” Lucas admonished Sami as he pulled her closer to him.

“I have not,” Sami claimed with a slight scowl coming over her features.

“You’ve been mad at me for almost two weeks,” Lucas informed Sami, “so I think I know when you’re trying to avoid me. Just because I agreed with Will about him getting married doesn’t mean you have to hold it against me forever. I can think of much better things for you to hold against me instead of a grudge.”

“You and your dirty mind,” Sami rolled her eyes at Lucas to no avail since he only snuggled closer to her.

“You know you love that particular personality trait of mine,” Lucas grinned mischievously.

“You wish,” Sami shot back to him quickly.

“No wishing needed,” Lucas teased lightly, “I know baby, I know.”

We’ve watched the seasons come and go
We’ll see them come and go again
But in winter’s chill or summer’s breeze
One thing will not be changing

We will dance
When the sun is shining in the pouring rain
We’ll spin and we’ll sway
And we will dance
When the gentle breeze becomes a hurricane
The music will play
And I’ll take your hand and hold you close to me
And we will dance

Sami tilted her head slightly towards him and Lucas saw the faint scar on her neck, one that thankfully had faded significantly over the years since her accident. Seeing the scar her body bore still hit him hard with the fact that Sami had almost died due in part for his need of revenge against her and the chain reaction of events that followed in the aftermath of his revelation to Brandon. He knew for certain he would never take Sami for granted again as long as he lived.

“What are you thinking about?” Sami asked Lucas after he’d grown quiet.

“How much I love you,” he admitted sincerely, then added, “and trying to figure out a way to get you out of here for a few minutes without anybody noticing we’ve left.”

“Do I need to remind you that your few minutes you constantly try to con me into taking with you usually take much longer than what you originally say they will end up being?”

“Can I help it that I’m not a minute man?” Lucas boasted proudly to Sami. “Come on Sami; let me take you somewhere private so I can have my way with you.”

“No,” Sami shook her head at him, “our son will know we’re gone and despite my misgivings about this wedding I won’t disappoint him on his special day.”

“Can’t blame a man for trying,” Lucas replied, “especially when the object of my affections is someone as enchanting and tempting as you are to me my dear.”

“Flattery will not get you anywhere with me,” Sami informed him matter of fact.

“We’ll see about that,” Lucas whispered confidently into Sami’s ear and kissed the side of her neck lovingly in hopes of making her see things differently.

Sometimes it’s hard to hold you tight
Sometimes we feel so far apart
Sometimes we dance as one
And feel the beating of each other’s heart

Some days the dance is slow and sweet
Some days we’re bouncing off the walls
But no matter how this world may turn
Our love will keep us from falling

“You shouldn’t worry about Will,” Lucas directed the conversation they were having back to their son since his obvious attempts to get Sami to leave with him had failed. “He’s got his head on straight and he knows what he is doing.”

“They are both so young,” Sami stated wistfully as she cast a glance over at Will.

“They aren’t as young as we were when Will was conceived,” Lucas remarked offhandedly.

“Don’t tell me Jana is pregnant,” Sami started to pull back away from Lucas as his words began to put various scenarios into her mind about Will and Jana.

“No, she isn’t,” Lucas wouldn’t let Sami out of his grasp, “although Will was furious with me for asking him if that was the reason why he wanted to get married to Jana before they graduated college.”

“You asked him?” Sami eyed Lucas incredulously.

“I was curious and Will let me know right off the bat that he and Jana were in love and they didn’t want to waste a moment of their lives being apart from each other. He told me he’d seen firsthand what happened when you wasted time playing stupid games instead of admitting to someone how you really felt about them.”

“We should know,” Sami admitted grudgingly to Lucas after a few seconds had passed between them.

“Yes, we do,” Lucas agreed with her. “I guess our son is pretty smart. He must get that from his father.”

“Please, don’t kid yourself, he gets his intelligence from his mother” Sami scoffed as Lucas decided to kiss her to stop her before she began laughing at him.

We will dance
When the sun is shining in the pouring rain
We’ll spin and we’ll sway
And we will dance
When the gentle breeze becomes a hurricane
The music will play
And I’ll take your hand and hold you close to me
And we will dance

“Thank you for giving me one more chance to make things right between us,” Lucas said sweetly to Sami as their lips parted from the kiss they had just shared.

“I have to admit you did a pretty good job of groveling and apologizing to me after I woke up from the accident,” Sami teased Lucas as her fingers found their way into his hair.

“I did not grovel,” Lucas claimed as a pout started to form on his lips.

“I tried everything I could to make you leave me alone, but no you kept coming by and pestering me,” Sami went on teasing Lucas as her laughter threatened to spill. “So I finally gave in and married you since it was obvious that you weren’t ever going to leave me alone.”

The music will play
And I’ll hold you close and I won’t let go
Even when our steps grow weak and slow
Still I’ll take your hand and hold you close to me
And we will dance

“You don’t regret marrying me, do you?” Lucas questioned as his hand slipped lower down to her backside and pulled her as close to him as he could get her since she hadn’t allowed him to take her off somewhere private.

“Never,” Sami whispered as she looked into his dark brown eyes, ones that were shining full of love for her and only her. “I do love you Lucas Roberts, even if it took us forever to find our way to each other.”

“I was worth the wait, wasn’t I?” Lucas smiled as he returned her teasing with some of his own.

“Most definitely,” Sami agreed with a smile. “I was thinking maybe we could slip off for a few minutes if you still want to, I don’t think we’ll be missed if we hurry.”

“Lead the way,” Lucas replied as his wife took his hand and they disappeared from the dance floor to go find a very quiet and private spot far away from the festivities.
