Reese has been featured in the first 7 cold openers of season 7 as well as had numerours Reese centric sub-plots in the episodes so far in season 7. Do you think the writers feel they have more storyline ideas for Reese this season because he's older and can present more adult plots for Reese? Or have you noticed a shift from the show being Malcolm centered in season's past to far more ensemble centered or could it be that the writers are trying to create substantial sub-plots in each episode for all of the characters. What's everyones thoughts on this?
Personally, I've noticed a shift in the last two seasons to a lot more episodes and plots in episodes to being centered around or having Reese figured prominently into them. The Reese Joins the Army series is about when I first started noticing this. Although my guess is the writers are trying to create subplots for all the characters in each episode. I feel that in the 4th and 5th season, an episode would focus on one or two characters and the others would have much smaller roles in those episodes. I personally like the episodes which find the family altogether as the actors all play so well off each other. :D
In the first season, the show did focus on Malcolm for the most part but over the years the show has certainly become more ensemble driven. I think that was necessary to do for a couple of reasons. The cast is top-notch, for sure. They all are perfect in their roles, in my opinion and bring a lot of depth to each of their characters and this has grown over the years as well, allowing for the writers to bring all of the family members into the episodes in a more direct way, as opposed to being more in the background. Reese was initially the bully in season 1 but has grown and matured since then to become a well rounded character who is far deeper than the bully we first met in season 1. We've seen heart, his love for his family, and his admitting to his brothers and also to himself, that he's growing up and the time for pranks are neary through. In his heart, Reese is a good kid and for the audience to see that so clearly as the seasons come and go is a true credit to Justin's acting. :)
