i do think in a wy it is a punishment because obviously they r denied their freedom but in some prisons they have there own tv, gym, and other facilities which means it is not a punishment in some ways...
days in the past when places like Alcatraz were in use...those prisons really were punishment bare cells....no tv ect...

I am an American that lives in the Netherlands, and I can tell you that after spending a good deal of time in Europe I think that america is jail happy. In America we put people in jail for EVERYTHING!!
In Europe it's not that way.
Pretty much everything is legal here so we don't have the "catch and find and put in jail" mentality that is in america.
To let you know how relaxed it is here is an example: My sister inlaw speeds it's what she does. Every week she get's 3 or 4 tickets. She is always caught on the automatic camera's. There are no police patroling the streets to catch speeders, they don't have to, the camera's do it for them. Anyway... She has had this ticket pattern for about 12 years. Now in America she would have lost her license, car would have been impounded and she probablly would have done jail time. In the Netherlands they send her a ticket and a bill. The attitude is "you want to pay us for being stupid then feel free." And she does, she pays about €450.00 a month is speeding fines. In some cases I think that America needs to relax. (I can say this I'm american) However in some cases that is not possible. For major crimes, ok send the offender to jail. For stupid stuff I don't think it's necessary.

But i don't think that is stupid stuff. If your sister in law speeds that much that frequently she will kill someone, i only hope when she does she doesn't kill and innocent person while she is doing it. My next door neighbour's son was killed by a speeding car, i once saw a motorcyclist slowly die after being hit by a speeding car, and, a couple of weeks ago two girls at my school were killed along with their sister and dad by a car that was speeding the other way, he flipped over the central reservation and landed on their car, he is fine and will only get a few years in prison for it. If she continues to speed in that way she will kill someone, probably herself, i wouldn't call that "stupid stuff"

I don't agree with what my sister in law does. You have to under stand that. And perhaps I should clarify something, it's not like she is driving 200 km's in a 50 km zone. It's not that dramatic. On country roads it's 50, she will do 60 or 65. But what about american freeways? the limit in most states in 65, people always do 75. So it's no different then my sister inlaw. (and I'm not defending her I am giving it as a example) What about the fact that people who speed (and yes that means 5 miles or more over the limit) after 3 times in 6 months can go to jail? If you drive 5 miles over the limit three times in the next week, and get caught, you can go to jail for up to 18 months. Is that fair?? I don't speed so I don't tolerate people who do. There is nothing so important that a person must speed. And if a person is late they should set their alarm maybe 10 minutes sooner. But it sounds like you know cases where people were driving really fast. And yes if it's so fast that a person can not control a car then that is really bad. And I am sorry that you know people who who have lost lives due to something like that. And speeding is not what I met by stupid stuff.(I should have clarified) Stupid stuff to me is when (and I have seen this) people are waiting outside the club drunk, waiting for a cab that has not show up, they are sitting there not causing problems, yet the officer arrested them for public intoxication. In my option that is a waste of tax payers money. I even offered to give them a ride home and was told to go in my car and shut up. Now that was stupid. Ok if the two girls and 1 guy were being loud, breaking something ok then I can understnd that. But I really believe that there are cases when jail is not necessary. What about the people who confuse their checking accounts? I personally know of a person who accidently paid taxes and made a major purchase at the same time. (missed communication with accountant) She was more then willing to make it right with the company that the appliance came from. But they were so upset that her check bounced they had her arrested for writting a fraudluent check. Come on that is not right!! But more and more it's getting that way. Anybody can have anybody thrown in jail, I don't personally agree with that. when I lived in America I did not have a sense of peace or privacy. I am not a bad person I have never been in trouble with the law, but people really have to "mind their P's and Q's to avoid potentially going to jail. For instance when a person does not pay a fine. I.E. traffic fine, why are they put in jail  why not make them do community service instead? Prison is a whole different subject, that is reserved for people who have done hanious crimes. they deserve to be there. But (and it seems this way in oregon) jail is reserved for the people who really have not done anything wrong. in fact the police call it "petty crime" so do the courts. what's so petty about it? if the person is going to go to jail, then it is not so petty is it?
