This is interesting. Check out this episode description:
GEORGE TAKEI PAYS HAL A VISIT ON "MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE" SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, ON FOX
Special Guest Appearance by George Takei
Hal gets a devastating phone call that his father has passed away, but because he never knew his father he doesn't shed a tear. In an attempt to overcompensate with his kids, Hal takes the boys shopping, lets them miss school and offers to buy Malcolm a new car until Lois steps in. And Hal's buddy Abe thinks that a visit from George Takei will cheer him up on the "Hal Grieves" episode of MALCOLM IN THE MIDDLE Sunday, Feb. 19 (7:00-7:30 PM ET/PT) on FOX.

From this description, it leads up to believe that Hal never knew his father but we met his father in "Family Reunion." So, I'm wondering if it's a mistake or if the guy we met in that episode was actually Hal's step-father or maybe the description is misleading and it means that Hal just never knew his father that well, ie; they weren't close.
At any rate, it does sound like a good eppy and definately a Hal-centric one. It'll be good to see Abe again as well. :)
