Hewitt Backs up 'Ghost'-ly Role
By Jay Bobbin

Few shows stage online seances for their fans.
Then again, few shows are like "Ghost Whisperer."

The solid first-season ratings for CBS' Friday drama prove it has captured the imaginations -- and emotions -- of many viewers. As both the star and a producer of the series, Jennifer Love Hewitt is happy to give it any additional promotion she can. While the occasional Internet seances involve James Van Praagh, the medium whose work partially inspired the show, Hewitt is now giving on-air answers to fan mail about the program during CBS' daytime lineup.

"We've been really excited that people have responded to the show the way they have," the friendly Hewitt says, "and it just means making sure we work harder than we did on the episode before, so that they continue to watch. It's been an adjustment, just knowing how to keep your energy up and making sure you stay healthy and rested, but it's been a welcome adjustment in my life."

Responding to audience queries in front of a camera also is new for Hewitt. "What we've tried to do with our show," she reasons, "is to involve viewers as much as possible, and to make it a fun experience to learn about ghosts and what they can do. We want viewers to know that we realize how hard it is to get faithful viewers who come back and watch. We know what that means and how special that is, and we don't take it for granted." Questions can be sent to the e-mail address ghostwhisperercbs.com.

Unlike NBC's "Medium," which often puts its heroine, played by Patricia Arquette, in direct peril, "Ghost Whisperer" usually keeps Hewitt's character, Melinda Gordon, as just a channeler between a spirit and a living person.

Still, Hewitt reflects, "fear and anger are two major things that happen with death. Whether it's a ghost or a person [instilling that in] her, it's not always, 'Let me sit with you and cry about my loved one.' Some people handle death in a violent manner, and I think it's interesting to see the one person you feel is safe lose her power for a second. It's not something we can do a lot, because then, it becomes a different show."

Former "Party of Five" regular Hewitt is somewhat flattered, but mostly surprised, by one effect of her current portrayal: Some people now approach her as if she actually has the power to communicate with the dead.

"Hopefully, that means I'm doing my job properly, that people actually believe I have this gift. In another way, it's alarming. I constantly find myself in situations where I feel like I can't help people the way I really want to; for me, that's a scary thing, because my personality is that of the ultimate helper. If my friends have a problem, I take it on until I get sick from it. When they work it out, I still have to find a way to let it go."

As co-executive producer of "Ghost Whisperer," Van Praagh is constantly on the set, and Hewitt appreciates the ongoing input from him.

"The subject matter, what Melinda does every day, initially was hard for me to grasp," the actress admits. "I was a person who was very afraid of death when we started the show, so to talk about it every day was intense and difficult for me. Now I've been able to find a different place for it. I realize the show is not about death, it's about living better and making sure you don't have unfinished business ... so that you don't have to meet Melinda Gordon one day."

I love that article! It makes alot of sense too!

However, I can relate to Jennifer Love Hewitt on helping people! I too am that way. I want to help people until I am sick. Even those who are unkind to me I at least make an effort to re-befriend them. I was once told, "You can't be mad at someone forever" which is true. I believe in 2nd chances. (and Karma).

I can relate to her on that aspect of having just being there for people. My name "Empathic Healer" isn't just a name on a board I chose. I do have a gift (I discovered in my teens). Spirits do come to me but its mostly in dreams and the only spirits I have seen are ones who look like flashes of light. (like streaks of lighting)

I have had things misplaced, things nearly fallen on me, I have had things dropped in front of me, I have heard whispers.

but my strongest gift is empathic healing.

People come into my life for a reason. I befriend them as anyone would. Overtime I find out they have a problem (one friend tried to kill herself over a suicidal depression because she was so attached to me and I was moving to another city) and I help her overcome these issues naturally. What I did was I had her meet a friend who went through the same things she did...overtime, she lost weight, felt good about herself, and the depression was there but it wasn't visble like it was before. She later left the guy and joined a clique. She changed her life without me being in the picture. It is kind of depressing because I see these people getting on with their lives and yet I feel at a stand still.

This isn't the first person I have helped. This person was my first I recognized as having this gift.

I have helped others.

The sad part is after they are helped they leave me. Its like I can't keep one friend. Like I'm not meant to be attached to anyone.

Sometimes I feel like a revolving door!

At times I do feel this "gift" is a curse as well. I see people doing things together, and shopping and its like this window...I am looking out but yet when I want to join people I befriend them for a short time and they have a reason not to be around me. It gets depressing after a while. O see so..alone.

My other gift is animal empathy. I can understand animals very well (its not like their speaking but I can understand them mentally)

This is my first cat:

Not common you'd find a cat who can do these things:
sit on command, give 5, wave, fetch, walk on a leash, open doors/cabinets, etc...so easily and be so laid back.

Not only have I understood and trained my cat like this (my cat learned a matter of things on his own or very fast)

I remember going to Petsmart and this guy was taken his/her (can't remember) puppy into training. I talked to the person and I asked the puppy to sit and then give paw. The person was shocked more like "how'd you do that?!"

My dad's dog was taught to "raise paw" in a week.

I constantly have animals around my house! (I always have) I lived in a house and had a family of the neighbors small dogs living in my garage.

I have cats living near my back porch. (these are feral mind you)

As far as being a medium: I tried to help someone with their spirit that was contacting them and well this person changed personalities. I tried to tell her about someone and she didn't want to hear it so I backed off. This person was afraid and I respected that. I didn't want to push this person in a corner so I never mentioned it again. I can tell you spirits can be pushy and this one kept telling me, "got to do this...got to do this..." and yet spirits don't know time so I was awoken at all hours.

Also apart of being an empath is I HATE touch! My mom says I have always hated it since I was a baby. I feel like I can feel things 10X more then they are. Like stucco on walls or the fibers in the paper. Its weird.

Anyway to anyone thanks for listening!

Hmm... what was that saying, and by who? "it's better to have loved than to have never loved at all," I think that's right.? ? Oh well, close enough, but in your case, I think it's true. I think it's better to make a positive impact on people's lives, even if it's for a short time, rather than never to have made any impact or worse a negative impact.

Thanks for the article Tom!:D

So does that mean we can send our questions to this site, and ask anything as long as it relates to the show? I only ask because I have a few of my own questions.

Yes, you can send your questions to the address that they give you on the Ghost Whisperer site.
