How do you like to be labeled?

I am an American of mainly German and Swedish descent, Lutheran, caucasian.

No, wait, I am not.

I am a Human Being on the planet Earth.

I do not need a label to tell me who I am.
I am me.
I do not need a label to tell me who you are.
You are you.

Are the labels you have attached to yourself and give others really necessary?

Or is it just another way in which Humanity likes to divide itself up into smaller and smaller groups to compete with each other?

Alot of, if not most Major religions have a Tower of Babel (http://unmuseum.mus.pa.us/babel.htm) story where Humanity at the current time is working together and accomplishing a great work.
Then they are split up.
And of couse progress on these great works ceases and they fall.

Think there is a lesson to be learned there?

Does the three year old know whom he is supposed to like and not like, or does society teach him this?
And if it is "society", then describe who "society" is.

Oh, Exactly what I always think... and I agree with you ;)

The other day someone asked me "Where are you from ?" and I said "From earth".. That person was like "what ? ? " and I said "I'm a human from earth"...

Ok wow I could not have said any of it better.
I think society has to have small groups to compete with each other. The rich must be rich the poor, well poorer. You really got me thinking about this and I had to think back to high school. We had the preps, scums, slobs, losers, geeks, and nobodies. The preps of course were popular and didn't talk to anyone but preps. And vice verse for the other groups. But at my 10 year reunion it was so funny because we all sat at tables in our groups once again... But the popular kids weren't so great anymore, most were divorced, indebt and dependant on something. (if you know what I mean)
The geeks of course were the rich guys, with the great jobs and the nicest cars in the parking lot, and the beautiful wifes on their arms. all of a sudden i wish i could have been a geek and studied harder. Who knew geeks grow up to be plastic surgeons and lawyers???
The scums and the slobs grew up and were the people that were just average americans. These were the people with a wife or husband, couple of kids and a medium sized house, 2 car garage and a white picket fence in the middle of suburbia. The nobodies (like me) were just average people with a normal life.
So in the end those labels that followed us around in our teens meant nothing when we were adults.

I like the saying human being....I am a human being on planet earth just trying to get by like everybody else...... Now that's a label I can live with!!

Exactly!!!! Labels do not and should not define who we are. We define who we are. I define myself as a person who lives her life the best way she knows how, is opinonated, has a wonderful, loving husband, and knows that no matter how bad life can seem sometimes, someone always has it worse.

I try not to label myself as anything, because it's other people who give you a label. Its a way for someone to some up your character or background. Its a tricky one. I don't go around trying to be a whacky zaney person so's not to fit in a category. I'm just me and I don't give much thought as to which box I should tick. I'm supposedly a Protestant, yet I don't believe in God. The world is a crazy, yet thought provoking place.

If you want me to describe how I see myself, then here's what I would say.

I'm cynical, grumpy at times, stubborn, likely annoying, hopefully with a good sense of humor.

Grampa. Dad. Husband. Brother. Son. Uncle. Brother-in-law. Teacher. Friend. Butthead. Martial Artist. Writer. Adventurer.

Labels are only bad if you let them be. Otherwise they are only descriptive. I don't mind any of them.

Ditto. I understand what Billygoat and other people mean, I'm subject every day to hateful and "discriminating" labels... but we have to accept we are all different, and sometimes we need to recognize someone as "more similar to me then others" just to talk with him/her about common things, and to compare points of view and experiences... I know what I'm talking about, you can trust me about this... Anyway, without "labels" we cannot have science, and science is not bad (unfortunately sometimes who use science is...)

Imagine how boring this ol' world would be if we were all exactly the same...

we shouldn't let labels get in the way of who we are as human beings. Everyone is special in their own way.

well i totally agree with ya! i hate how people judge us - like say ur...from pakistan or something. people automatically assume that ur a refugee or something. its shocking. but thats just how people are. its how society is. i remember my lil cousin saying to her teacher when asked where she was from, she said "earth" and the teacher said "really? but so is everyone else here rachel" "yeah miss, but people from mars could be living here and we wouldnt know" that totally goes off the point, but i just felt like saying it.
everyone is unique and i think that labels SUCK
