View Full Version : Favorite Westerns?

This is another genre that's produced some of my favorite movies over the years, and seeing all these favorite threads popping up lately inspired me, LOL...and since trying to name one favorite is too difficult for me, I'm going to leave a top ten list. LOL, I'm not at all sure that there's anyone else here who even likes these films at all...I'm pretty sure I've never seen one mentioned anyway, either by me or anyone else...but, of course, not too many of them get made any more, and that could be one of the reasons. Whatever, if there are any other fans around, any and all responses are welcome as always. BTW, I'm limiting mine to theatrical films, so a few classics like Lonesome Dove won't appear on it... if anyone else should want to do one though, of course feel free to interpret the category any way you like, and with any number of films.

1. Dead Man
2. Unforgiven
3. The Long Riders
4. Pat Garrett & Billy The Kid
5. McCabe & Mrs. Miller
6. The Missouri Breaks
7.The Wild Bunch
8. The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly
9. Monte Walsh
10. Open Range

And my list of real favorites in this genre could easily go on into the thirties, probably further, LOL. Obviously my list probably wouldn't even remotely resemble one that any professional critic would make, but I was still actually surprised to find that I had no room in my top ten for any that weren't made within my lifetime, which means all of them are at least relatively recent...well, maybe recent is stretching it a little, but still, they're not exactly ancient, LOL. Point being, I think, at least to my taste, even in this genre that largely fell out of fashion long ago, great movies still keep popping up, at least every once in awhile.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

The opening scene really sets the mood.

I don't know if I can come up with 10, but I'll give it a shot.

1. McClintock - John Wayne, a man's man :D
2 High Noon - Do not forsake me, oh my darlin
3 Lonesome Dove - Diane lane in yeller hair. Did you think I wouldn't sneak one of hers in?
4 Dances With Wolves - Costner does anything well
5 The Shootist - John Wayne again, and a youthful Ron Howard

That's about it. I've seen the others you folks have mentioned and enjoyed them, but these are the ones I watch whenever they are on TV. I also have most of them on DVD or VHS.

In regards to Open Range, what did I say about Costner? ;) and Robert Duvall was also in Lonesome Dove.

Well, to be honest, no...I never thought that for a minute...just figured it'd be #1.:D LOL, it IS a great western, too...really one of my favorites as well.

And Once Upon A Time In The West, High Noon, Dances With Wolves...I won't indulge in a second ten, but if I did those three would be on it. But even though it's kind of blasphemous to say I guess, fact is I was never as big a fan of the Duke as most folks are. Still, that second ten list would definitely include Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and probably John Wayne & The Cowboys...and the ol fella HAS grown on me some over the years, LOL.

And MAN... I just realized that even though I'm not indulging in a second ten list, I'm already halfway there without even trying. :o

oops almost started another thread lol

LOL...I ALWAYS have that problem...more of the time then not, I can't even seem to make ONE post without starting multiple threads, LOL...Anyway, yeah, Clint and Jimmy would definitely be on any list like that that I made too.

I really like all the films on your list that weren't on mine, too, except #4 and #10...don't think I've seen either of those. Thinking about American Tale 2 though, there've been some really good comedy westerns made over the years, too. One I liked a lot that was also sort of a musical was Cat Ballou...another in a slew of great performances by Lee Marvin in that one, as well as one of Jane Fonda's first films...and Nat King Cole and another famous musician, can't remember right now..:o acted as the musical storytellers...real cool film. And one that's faded completely into obscurity now, I think, called Waterhole #3...great performance as usual by James Coburn in that one, and a really hilarious film...at least, I thought so as a youngster...it's been a LONG time on that one, so can't say for sure what I'd think now.

Stubby Kaye...That's IT!, LOL...Thanks.

I guess I created confusion by trying to use shortcuts in my response last night...LOL, another thing that seems to happen more often than not. Anyway I HAVE seen High Plains Drifter, and agree with you about it's quality...I think that was actually Clint's debut as a director, and if so, an excellent start for what's proved to be a great career behind the camera as well as in front of it, (my own lonely opinion concerning Million Dollar Baby notwithstanding.) But in fact, what I was trying to say is that I really liked all the films on your list except the ones I haven't seen...which are Hondo and An American Tail 2. And yeah, I'm sure American Tail 2 is a western...being a cartoon certainly doesn't disqualify it, LOL. I just meant that I haven't seen it, but assumed it was a sort of comedy...got me started thinking on the comedy western genre in general, as things have a way of doing, LOL.

All right, another Open Range fan, LOL...yeah, that's one of the very few recent ones that's been made, and proved that Hollywood can still do great ones when they put their minds to it.

Yeah, I was thinking that might have been the first one, too...I wasn't absolutely sure he directed Misty, or about which one of those two came first, but I think you're probably right about that. There was also a real strange movie he did before either of those called The Beguiled...I'm pretty sure he didn't actually direct it, but as far as my memory of it goes, it does have a style that makes me think it's possible that he might have, LOL...now I know I'm going to end up having to go to imdb and look it up, LOL.

Oh, and almost forgot...AMAZINGLY good to talk to someone else with that opinion of MDB...the friend I saw the film with had about the same opinion of it that I did...and until now, she had held the record of being the only single person I've ever talked to about that film, online or off, who didn't think it was absolutely great....ROFL...HURRAY! LMAO.

Wow, that's a trip, LOL...yeah, I still remember that movie even though I was a tyke when I saw it, had to go with an adult guardian, LOL, and haven't seen it since...but it kind of creeped me out at the time, and now I remember it as a sort of Misery set in the Civil War days. It was completely different from anything I'd seen Clint do before, and the impression it made has lingered...I think I'm going to have to try and watch it again, LOL. Thanks for taking the time to look that up. :D
