This has got to be the top feel good movie of all time. For George Bailey ,all round nice guy and reluctant businessman things have hit an all time low and he is about to end his life.Help comes from above in the shape of rookie angel Clarence Oddbody, played superbly by Henry Travers, who has been waiting 200 years to get his wings. George Bailey is shown what life would have been like if he had never been born and realises that every man's life touches someone else's life and that we are all here for a reason. The film is filled with great character actors from that era including,Donna Reed,Lionel Barrymore and Thomas Mitchell. This film has one thing that modern movies don't have and that is the faith factor. This the simple belief that family, friends and the supernatural do have a profound effect on our lives and that even when life is at it's lowest, faith still counts and the good guy can still win

This is my fave film of all time and i think the best feelgood movie of all time and I challenge anyone to tell me otherwise

Yeah, I know that starts to happen with older films...still, I think this one has to be one of the better known, and probably loved, films of all time. At least in the US, it's never stopped being a holiday tradition...I've spent Decembers in a number of different cities here over the years, but have never been in one where this film isn't showing multiple times during the month, LOL. And since the advent of cable, that has REALLY gone through the roof. I think the only movie that gets shown even close to as many times is probably A Christmas Story, and that only because TNT started showing it non-stop for 24 straight hours a few years ago, LOL. But I think even now, more people than not who watch movies are going to get around to IAWL eventually.
You know, thinking about James Stewart, too...he's one of those rare actors that's practically a genre all his own, LOL. There've been very few over the years who've been so distinct, and yet been able to appear in so many different sorts of films...Stewart was all over the map...Hitchcock thrillers, westerns, romantic comedy, schmaltz, war movies, adventures, LOL, you name it, he did it... you could easily make a top ten list of his films alone, and end up feeling like you'd left way too many out, LOL....I've seen so many of them and was trying to think of one I didn't like, and the only one I came up with was Hitch's remake of Man Who Knew Too Much...and even that wasn't a bad film, I just didn't like it, LOL. Which is really amazing when you think about it...so many films in so many different genres, and hardly a clunker in the bunch...not the sort of track record you find too often with actors from any era. I think more movie fans than not will always at least reach points in their lives when they get curious enough about the past to rediscover little pieces of it through these old films....hope so, anyway.

As i mentioned in an earlier discussion ,the only 2 actors of the modern movie era that can be even put in the leauge of James stewert are Nicholas Cage and Tom Hanks
