The City and County of San Francisco is the fourth-largest city in California (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California) and the fourteenth-largest in the United States (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States), with a 2005 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005) population of 739,426. It is located on the tip of the San Francisco Peninsula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Peninsula) and has traditionally been the focal point of the San Francisco Bay Area (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Bay_Area), whose population exceeds seven million residents. San Francisco is the second most densely populated major American city after New York (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City).
In 1776 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1776), the Spanish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain) became the first Europeans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Europe) to settle in San Francisco, which they named for St. Francis (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_of_Assisi). With the advent of the California gold rush (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_gold_rush) in 1848 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1848), and the Comstock Lode (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comstock_Lode) and silver mines in 1859 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1859), the city entered a period of rapid growth. After being devastated by the 1906 earthquake and fire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1906_San_Francisco_earthquake), San Francisco was quickly rebuilt and is today one of the most recognizable cities in the United States.
San Francisco has a unique mix of physical characteristics, including its months-long episodes of fog, its steep rolling hills, its eclectic mix of architecture (including Victorian style houses (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Painted_ladies) and modern highrises), and being surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pacific_Ocean) and the San Francisco Bay (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Bay). Famous hallmarks and landmarks include the San Francisco cable cars (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_cable_car_system), the Transamerica Pyramid (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transamerica_Pyramid), the Golden Gate Bridge (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Gate_Bridge) and Alcatraz Island (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcatraz_Island).
