News (spoilers) are slowly starting to come out about season 3.
General Spoilers:
Added August 10th:
The premiere is set for October 4th, which is only about 7 weeks away. Filming on the 3rd season began this past Monday.
There are 3 new cast members who have been announced for this coming season.
1. Rodrigo Santoro - Little is known about the character he will be playing. It's rumored though that he'll be playing an "other."
2. Elizabeth Mitchell - She'll be playing a character named Juliet, who may be a love interest for Jack.
3. Kiele Sanchez - She'll most likely be playing an "other" and it's rumored that she'll be a love in interest to Rodrigo Santoro's character.
Also, you may remember Ms. Klugh, who was the "other" who interrogated Michael in the last couple of episodes of season 2, played by April Grace. She will be returning to LOST in season 3 as a recurring character as will M.C. Gairney (Zeke aka. Mr. Friendly).
Both Michael Emerson ("Henry Gale") and Henry Ian Cusack (Desmond) will be regulars in season 3.
We'll be seeing more of Penelope Widmore in seasaon 3 outside of the island and we will learn more about Libby and her backstory this season as well.
Added August 19th:
Shannon will appear in another character's flashback this season.
When we first see Jack, Kate and Sawyer in season 3, they will be imprisoned, possibly in some sort of cell.
Charlie and Bernard try to regain some sort of order back at the camp. Rose suspects that Charlie is keeping a secret about the hatch.
Added August 24th:
It will be revealed that Jack has actually met one of the "others" back before the crash, which will explain why he's the only one they are willing and able to cooperate with.
Added August 25th:
Jack's wife, Sarah will appear in a flashback this season.
Ethan will be back this season (presumably in flashbacks as the character is still dead, to the best of my knowledge although this being LOST, one never can be too sure...)
The Hatch is gone and will no longer be seen on the show except perhaps in a flashback.
Added September 11th:
Two of the new actors mentioned above are going to be characters who are going to turn out to have been original survivors who have been in the background the first two seasons. The third is going to most likely be an "other."
Added September 20th:
A character we already know will die fairly early on this season.
Added October 1st:
There's an airport dream seaquence, featuring, Claire, Charlie, Hurley, Locke and one character who's no longer living. This episode will most likely be episode 3, "Further Instructions," which is a Locke backstory.
That same episode also features the fates of Locke, Desmond and Eko, when what happened when the hatch collapsed, is revealed.
It is revealed early on in season 2 that Jack suspected his wife Sarah, as having an affair with his father, Dr. Christian Shephard. I don't know if it's true or just a suspicion on Jack's part.
Goodwin (the "other" who Ana-Lucia killed) and Ethan (the "other" who Charlie killed) as well as Zeke, aka Mr. Friendly and Alex, the french woman's daughter, all appear early on in season 2. Ethan and Goodwin, supposedly in flashbacks as both are dead, although with this show, one never knows!
We will learn "Henry Gale's" real name early on this season.
Two people "close" to Sun die this season.
We may not learn for sure who the father of Sun's baby is until the series finale of LOST, whenever that will be.
A new recurring character (male) will be appearing this season and he may have only one eye.
Added October 22nd:
We won't see Penny (the woman whom the folks in the artic station called in the season 2 finale) until after the show returns from hiatus in early 2007.
Mrs. Klugh will return sometime this season.
There will be an "others" flashback this season, to see the island before the "others" arrived. We'll find out there are "others" living elsewhere on the island besides the set of recently seen homes.
Karl, the young man who was caged in the season premiere across from Sawyer is not an "other."
It will be revealed before the hiatus that Kate was married before. The actor playing her husband will be seen in two episodes this season.
Jack has to use his doctor's skills to save someone's life this season...one of the "others"
Added October 31st:
In Juliet's flashback episode, set to air in February 2007, Ethan will appear. Both will be off of the island in the flashback.
In episode 6, Kate's flashback episode, we learn that Kate got married in Miami at some point in her past and that her name, at least at that time was not Kate. Also, someone else from the island (not sure if it's a survivor or an "other") was either at the wedding or in Miami at that time.
One of the character's on the island is gay, we will soon find out.
A series regular dies in this week's episode and it's not Kate, Sawyer, Jack, Locke or Sun and, most likely, not Hurley.
We'll find out before the 3 month break whom the xrays Jack saw belong to.
The Marshall appears again in Kate's flashback episode, the last episode before the break.
Added November 21st:
Black Rock, the ship that was found in the middle of the island in season 1, will be seen again in an upcoming episode. We most likely won't find out why it's there or how it got there until season 4.
Speaking of the Black Rock, remember Doc Arzt, the passenger who died when the explosive blew up in season 1. Well, he returns this season in a flashback.
As of now, there are 3 more deaths planned this season. One of the character's is not a regular, the other two are both major character deaths. The non-regular character death, happens very soon after we return from the break.
The season 3 finale will be a Ben centric episode. (This particular spoiler is especially subject to change, as it's still fairly early in the season to be learning anything about the season finale.)
We'll finally find out what happened to the kids from the tail section who were abducted after the plane crash, or at least get an idea as to what happened to them by the end of the 8th episode.
Cindy, the flight attendant who survived the crash but supposedly was abducted by the "others' will be seen again this season, however, it's unknown if it will be in a flashback or present day.
Added December 22nd:
In the first episode of the new year, we'll see more of the Other town prior to the plane crash.
We'll learn more about Karl and Alex.
Ethan will be back in another flashback but in this one, he'll also appear off the island with another Other.
The Widmore's will be back in the 2nd episode after the show returns in Desmond's flashback episode. We'll see Penny and her father, Charles in the flashback. I don't know if we'll see Penny again in the present day, as we saw in the season 2 finale, when she got the call that the island was "found."
Have you been wondering about Jack's tattoos and what they mean? Well, you're in luck! In an upcoming episode, we find out what they mean and in what context Jack decided to get them, during his next (and final) flashback episode of season 3, set to air on February 21st.
Rousseau, the Frenchwoman will be back before the month of February is out.
Hurley will find a junked car on the island in an upcoming episode.
The "Others" do have a submarine.
Added January 28th:
A character will die in the first episode back on February 7th but it's most likely not someone you'll be upset about.
We'll learn quite a bit more about Desmond's earlier life, before he ended up on the island.
There will be a new female character introduced around episode 3.17, who will recur for the rest of the season.
We will see Boone again before the season is out. It's unknown at this time if it will be in a flashback or a hallucination similar to his last appearance in Locke's back story episode earlier this season.
Vincent the dog is still on the island and we'll be seeing him again very soon.
Added March 6th:
Both Boone and Shannon will appear in flashbacks later this season. Since both characters are dead, they will be appearing in another character's flashback episode. Whose, I wonder...
We find out who Claire's mother and father are. And one of her parent's is a character we've already seen, many times before.
The others have a submarine and the survivors will discover this out in the coming weeks.
Ben offers to supply Locke with some information in exchange for something from him...
The marshal may appear in another flashback before the season is out.
A new female recurring character appears later this season. She does not appear in a flashback and she is not an other nor one of the survivors.
There will be at least two, perhaps more, deaths this season and at least one of them will be a major character.
The issue of Claire's baby's paternity will be explored if not solved completely before the 3rd season finale.
