Heres some good beginner tutorials for photoshop ;).
http://evenicoulddoit.com/?page=ps/the_toolbox
http://www.photoshopcafe.com/tutorials/layers/Layers.htm
Those should help a little, and also check:
http://www.good-tutorials.com/
For anything else. Type in what your looking for in the top right of that sight for examplke "Beginner" and you get a list of tutorials for beginners, you'll need to have a little look through for specific ones, or if you know exactly what your after, again just type it in ("tools" "layers palette" etc...). Also check ou the "Basics" section on the left hand side ;).

You'll need to create an account with them, shouldn't take long though.
https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop&loc=en
If after the account it doesn't give you the file, or take you back to the right page, go here...
http://www.adobe.com/downloads/ PhotoshopCS2 > Try > *operating system* ;).

I forgot your in the A.M. I should keep things simple for you to reply to :p.
But for the most part, big name companies like Industrial Light And Magic (ILM > War Of The Worlds, Star Wars Episode 1/2/3, Priates Of The Caribbean 1 and 2 etc...) use Adobe Photoshop among a few others to create textures for models. Also their concept artists, including concept artists from Weta (digital effects for LOTR's trilogy, and King Kong 2005) and pretty much 98% of most companies in the world for various design companies use Photoshop for concept art and designs;).
Plus, Photo retouchers absolutely love Photoshop for many reasons. It allows complex tasks to be carried out very quickly and easily because of the simplicity of the tools. And it manages history very well, so you can always go back to a point where you needed to make a correction.
I could go on I guess, but I'll stop there and give you time to wake up ;).
As far as I know PSP is more of a home application for people who like to just play around with graphics, but ofcourse photoshop is used in the same way by a lot of people. BUT, in no way and I saying Coral are "mediocre"...They do have an application a lot of concept artists now days like to use along side Photoshop, and thats Coral Painter. From what I know about it, it just does a better job than any other application for recreating a digital art studio, everything you need for real (painted, chalked, pencil...I think) art is in there ;).
In fact bill, theres no need to counter this post, this was more of an informative post! :D.
