Kat goes shopping at Tori Spelling's Garage Sale
December 8, 2006

Hey, kitties!

I just got back from Tori Spelling's (ex-Donna, 90210) estate sale – which was listed on her sign as "Dazzling" so I didn't make that up. The sale had been publicized all over the media as a "yard sale" and in fact, there were pictures of Tori and her husband, actor Dean McDermott, actually nailing the clearly homemade fliers to posts. However, when my colleague Jerry and I arrived, it was to see signs proclaiming it an "estate sale." Now, there's a big difference between an estate and a yard sale and the difference is mainly in price. You can expect to be able to get a cool shirt for $5 at a yard sale whereas at an estate sale, that same shirt may go for $25. Unfortunately, such was the case at Tori's sale.

We did lose a few people to the long wait time, most notably a pair of pals who were vacationing from Texas and had come to the sale. They couldn't stand it anymore, I guess. There were two women who weren't necessarily the Beverly Hills, 90210 (http://soapnet.go.com/shows/90210/index) demographic but they were both big fans of the show and one said, "I can't miss 90210 when it's on. It's one of my favorite shows!" So, a lot of people appeared to be there not just for a bargain but also for a little piece of fandom heaven. While I was there for work, I admit to having some real curiosity about what the house of Tori Spelling would contain.

My bubble was burst when I found out that it wasn't Tori's house; it was a house they rented for the occasion. In fact, two men came out and hammered in a 'for lease' sign as we stood there. I am actually glad it wasn't her house because the exterior was in need of a little handy help. There was a heavy media presence and even fashion expert Steven Cojocaru was there and came out waving a bag – though I'm not sure he bought anything.

Once we finally got inside (after surrendering both cell phone and camera), I was overwhelmed to see the house fully decorated but with tables of Tori-merch everywhere. It was a little disconcerting because it was hard to tell which items were part of the décor and which were for sale. Propped on a chair and looking lovely in jeans and a sassy, sleeveless maternity top was Ms. Spelling herself. I caught glimpse of her as she stared in seeming puzzlement as her estate sale director Sharon Yost priced some doggy fashions – presumably worn by Tori's pug Mimi La Rue. Sharon was pricing the clothes a little high and Tori remarked, "I paid, like two dollars for those." So, those of you who may hear reports that the pricing was ridiculous shouldn't blame Tori.

But I was excited when I opened a cabinet to find tons of mementos from Tori's first wedding to Charlie Shanian. I wanted to buy a Tori & Charlie Christmas 2003 ornament for nostalgia's sake but I wasn't willing to pay more than $10 and Sharon insisted it was worth $25. Upstairs there were rooms of designer clothes, Shabby Chic furniture, framed pictures, shoes, handbags, and oddly, makeup and bath products – some of them used. I scoffed when I saw them and said to myself that it was crazy to think someone would buy a half-full bottle of perfume. Then I looked to my right and saw a woman with a box full of makeup and goodies.

In the end, we walked out with a datebook of Donna Martin's (Tori's 90210) character and that was it. We wanted plastic hangers that had "Tori" printed on them but we thought they'd be $5 and instead they were $50. I hope someone's overpriced dress is hanging on them, but it won't be mine! It was a fun time and I really think Tori is a sweet girl (as did everyone who walked out of the sale). She was gracious enough to sign people's items and was thrilled by some of the purchases. Dean also seemed like a stellar dude and was very attentive to his preggers wife. All in all, it was a good day to be out and about in Hollywood. Just not a good day for bargain hunters!

Until next time,
Be safe out there
