I think they dont really learn stuff like that until they go to school. I'd wait to see how your cousin does in school and then start worrying. Four seems pretty young to me to even know the ABC's because they teach you that in kindergarten which comes later. But I wouldn't go calling a shrink because your four year old can't write numbers yet. That's just me. I think I'd hold on and hope the child gets along with others and does OK in school.

My 3 and 4 year old are reading and writing. If I were you, I would contact the nearest University's Special Education program (if you live in the states) and have the kid evaluated--if you continue to have concerns. I have a cousin, that when he talked would leave off the beginning consonants of words. I took him to the speech department at the local university and had him evaluated. I was told that he should have been in therapy long before the age of four--when I finally took it upon myself to have him evaluated.
It is my humble opinion.
P.S. A lot of developmental problems/concerns can be corrected simply by identifying and addressing the issue early in childhood. My cousin was talking just fine by five and is currently ranked as one of the nations top math students after getting a 100% on the math portion of the ACT. On all of the other portions, he did not score less than the 90th percentile. I tell you this because often childhood learning disabilities have nothing to do with indicating intellectual ability.

Oh sure. Just pump the kid full of meds and say special a lot. The pharmaceutical companies will love you for it.

If you re-read the post you will NOT find any mention of medicating a child. Universities have specially trained people who will work with parents and their children to address developmental issues. Medication is NOT used. And, going through a university is MUCH less expensive than paying a child psychologist to conduct testing and then offer a referral to the already over-burdened special education public school programs, which will more than likely get to your kid later in their development!
DO NOT ADD WORDS TO MY POST NOR YOUR FALSE INSINUATIONS!

-Larry Larry that was so out of line...
I would highly recoomend that you stop now...
BJ offered up some excellent advice.
I have worked in the Special Education field for 30 years.
V3ppp your cousin may be fine... The situation may remedy itself when they start school.
However... these days students entering Kindergarten are evaluated and are often expected to have the capacity to do many fundamental things, holding a pen and writing letters are some of them... When they can't the child may get labled.
By investigating now via the university system.. you can get them evealuated and start remedial and practical approaches (should they need them) to help build these skills before they even enter Kindergarten.
If they do have a disability like dyslexia or aphasia or ataxia or one of the multitude of other disorders... then compensation techniques can be taught to get the child up to speed...
Good luck and let us know how it goes..
Regardless early intervention is KEY!!!!!

Well I certainly hope the child succeeds and does well. And by advocating for education, I don't suppose I'm doing the child any haarm. But there was a recent series in the New York Times about the failures of the child therapy system that explained how quick they are to misdiagnose and medicate, often leading to problems with the child's self esteem for being singled out later down the line. My opinion on a four year old who doesn't know how to write yet is that it's not really a big deal as Vinnie stated it. I couldn't even stay in the lines coloring when I was four. So it's not really that I'm underinformed on the issue, I just happen to have a different opinion on the matter. And what Vinnie deserves on this post is a variety of opinions to help her and the parents off the child come to a decision. If you disagree with me that's your business.

Well Larry it is a shame you didn't say that the first time.
Everyones opinion is welcome... it always is.
V3ppp can make an informed decision once they take these ideas and do their own research but you know the rules here... there is no attacking other people opinions and what you did was just that.
BJ made a very good point and now you have too...
Let's move on.
