The sight of a Hindu clergyman saying the US senate's traditional morning prayer was too much for members of a Christian group, who yesterday tried to shout him down before being arrested.
As Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at a Hindu temple, offered the prayer, two women and a man began shouting "this is an abomination" from the gallery.

The trio continued to yell at the Hindu cleric as they were taken away in handcuffs by police, yelling, "no Lord but Jesus Christ!" and "there's only one true God!". The male protester told the Associated Press, "we are Christians and patriots".

For several days, some Christian religious groups had urged their members to object to the prayer because Mr Zed would be "seeking the invocation of a non-monotheistic god".

Mr Zed, the first Hindu to offer the Senate prayer, began: "We meditate on the transcendental glory of the deity supreme, who is inside the heart of the Earth, inside the life of the sky and inside the soul of the heaven. May He stimulate and illuminate our minds."

Mr Zed, who was born in India, was invited by the Democratic Senate majority leader, Harry Reid, a staunch opponent of the Iraq war. Speaking in the chamber shortly after the prayer, Mr Reid defended the choice and linked it to the war debate.

"I think it speaks well of our country that someone representing the faith of about a billion people comes here and can speak in communication with our heavenly father regarding peace," said Mr Reid, who is a Mormon.

Police identified the protesters as Ante and Katherine Pavkovic and their daughter Kristen, members of a Christian organisation called Operation Save America/Operation Rescue.

The group said in a statement: "The Senate was opened with a Hindu prayer placing the false god of Hinduism on a level playing field with the one true god, Jesus Christ. This would never have been allowed by our Founding Fathers."

Reverend Flip Benham, the leader of the group, said: "Not one senator had the backbone to stand as our Founding Fathers stood. They stood on the gospel of Jesus Christ! There were three in the audience with the courage to stand and proclaim, 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me'."

Harry Reid is on point. BTW, these protestors need a New Testament refresher course. Operation Save America, go figure. They need to save themselves.

Matthew 6:5-15 And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

I watched this story on "Countdown with Keith Oberman". It's very sad when you have individuals who behave such as this. All the man was doing was saying a prayer. We should celebrate all types of prayer instead of harboring prejudice.

As a follower of Wicca, it fills my heart with sadness to see such hate. I don't care what name the divine is called, nor do I think what I practice is better than anything else. I was raised Baptist and then converted to Catholicism when I met my husband. We both feel that no one religion holds all the answers. We can and continue to learn from many teachings. Hubby has studied Catholicism, Judism (sp?) Budhism and others.

I hope the protesters finally get a clue what it truly means to call oneself "Christian".

Not so sure about my country disappointing me, but there sure are some noodle-heads out there who have a different interpretation of the Bill of Rights and of the Declaration of Independence.

My country continues to dissapoint me.

Humanity as a whole continues to disappoint me, Mandy. You'd have thought that by now we'd have learnt a few valuable leasons in living decent, civilised lives with one another. Alas, you only have to look at the state of the world to see that's not the case. Fundamentalist morons like those three protesters (or to put it more bluntly, potential terrorists) need a reality check. What's even more frightening is that so many people actually believe much the same way as the more extreme of their mates do.....not only in the US but worldwide. Makes for some disturbing possibilities. If it comes to a worst case scenario, the whole shebang could devolve into a religious war.....jihad vs crusade.

Nothing wrong with spirituality...a sense of the divine and our place in it, but V.I. Lenin surely hit the nail on the head when he said "Organised (my addition) religion is the opiate of the masses". A little bit of (fearful) indoctrination when you're young, and you lose all common sense. Clear thinking goes right out the door, and anyone asking too many questions either gets pushed to one side and ignored (furtively/embarrasingly dismissed) or, in the extreme case, castigated and excommumicated (they used to burn heretics in the old days).

Fortunately, there are people around with the intelligence and knowledge who try and make a difference. However not too many people listen to them....or in most cases have the intelligence to really appreciate what they have to say. Too many sheep.
