A little member of the parakeet family....from Oz:D

Full name is Budgerigar:)

They can whistle really well and you can teach them to talk. They're long lived too.

Out in the bush you can see millions of them.....mainly yellow-green budgies, but they do come in other colors.

Here they are... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Budgerigar

Well I've learned my new thing for the day. Thanks Ozzie.

Pooh congrats on the new family member ( does that make her my "granddaughter")?

I learned something new today too. I've never heard of them before. But, from the picture on Wiki, they are very cute. Congrats, Pooh, on the new addition to your family.

Did you decide on a name yet? :)

Well Pooh...a "budgie" was my very first pet that was really "mine" when I was a little girl. It was the first creature I was in charge of "taking care of" from food and water to cleaning his cage. It was a little male, with a tourquoise breast and little "zebra" marking on his wings, as you describe. I named him Birdie. He was my very best friend. My mom would let me keep him out of his cage, and he would "wait for me" on one of our window sills until I came home from school, and then he would "swoop" onto my head as soon as I came in the door, and would carry on with whistling and a little "buzzing" sound he would make. He was ALWAYS with me, on my shoulder or head. He could say "pretty bird" and "hello" but that was really all. I had him for 2 years, and when I was 10 years old I went away to summer camp. This is a sad little story, but he wouldn't eat after I left. People don't realize that birds can "attach" themselves to whomever gives them love and takes care of them, and Birdie actually died. The vet said "it was a broken heart." My mom was afraid to tell me, and "got another bird" with the same markings as Birdie thinking "I wouldn't know the difference." Needless to say, as I rushed upstairs to see my little friend whom I had missed so much, I took one look and screamed... WHERE IS MY BIRDIE? My mother then realized "it was not just a bird in a cage," but a true companion and friend to me, and had to tell me the truth. My heart was broken too. It took many months for it to heal.
You will have a wonderful time with your new friend. They give a lot back if you give to them and spend time with them. Of course, as with all things, each has it's own personality, and I am sure some are friendlier than others, just like people, but I hope you have many years of fun with your new budgie/buddie! I hope this wasn't too sad of a story, but he was one of my first and most beautiful friends for the time we spent together.

Aww I'm sorry to hear about Birdie Lin. I'm like that with my bunny Tyler, he has his own personality and I see him more as a friend than a pet as we both do things (such as me putting my arms out when I want a hug from him so he will run over to me into my arms :)) that any other pet wouldn't do. It's strange how we begin to recognise their "personalities" and can tell the second something isn't right :)

Or, you can also keep one of budgies bigger cousins....the Rainbow Lorikeet:D

Quite a bit larger than a budgie and infinitely more noisier!!! Especially when you get a flock of them sitting in a bottlebrush tree eating the nectar from the flowers!!!:D

"SCREECH, SCREECH!!!", AND YOU CAN'T HEAR ANYTHING ELSE!!

Or, you'll be sitting under a gum tree, and they'll be dropping the flower capsules down on your head:eek: There's heaps of them around too....and their colors live upto their name.

Here they are.... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rainbow_Lorikeet
