When was the last time you made a five-year commitment? Publicly? And backed it up with $250,000? My answer? Never. Well, I got married—but that only lasted 5 years, 8 months. Some commitment. Probably the only commitment I have really stuck to, and will stick to, is motherhood. I’m 48 years old, I’ve been a teacher for 23 years, a mother for 16 years, and I’ve never made a public five-year commitment to anything—and stuck to it. So what? The thing is, that’s exactly what Alyssa did just a little over a month ago. She made a public commitment to serving as the founding ambassador for the global network for neglected tropical diseases control. She committed to serving as their ambassador for five years, and she started her five year stint with a promise of $250,000. And we all know about it. Think she’ll follow through? Do we even have to ask? The thing is, I can’t let this go. Her willingness to commit the rest of her 30’s to a purely humanitarian cause is getting to me. I feel embarrassed. What am I doing? What can I do? Let’s face it, I don’t have $250,000 to commit, but that’s not the point. What I can’t do doesn’t matter; it’s what I can do that counts. Did I mention that I’m a teacher? I teach music in an elementary school. I have over 300 students every year. Talk about connections. Children are natural humanitarians. They are also endlessly energetic and persistent. So, my students and I are going to fundraise for gnntdc. Every 50 cents pays for a treatment. $2.50 will pay for the complete series of treatments one person will need. $10 will take care of a family of four. These are statistics my students and their parents can comprehend and manage. I have other connections—with a foundation looking for efforts to support. I will ask them to match what we raise. How much are we talking about? Probably just in the hundreds. But that will be hundreds more than if I continue to do nothing. There. I’ve done it. I’ve made a public commitment. Hold me accountable, will you? I’ll keep you posted.

This is the type of response that I think would make Alyssa very proud. To see her contribution and care inspire someone and turn into something bigger. I think that it is the compassion, the effort and the need to do something more calls for applause for you and your students. Every cent makes a difference, and whilst you might feel that a few hundred dollars isn't much, to someone else it might be the difference between life and death, sickness and health. Your contribution will greatly matter. Thank you Linda!!
