It's the holiday season and I know we've all got some favorite memories to share! I thought it might be a fun thread.
My fondest memory is waking up Christmas morning and absolutely dying to go downstairs but mom making me wait in my room until she could call my grandma and grandpa to drive over. That ten minute drive of theirs took years! They would show up - nannie in her long, tan coat and papa in his flannel shirt - and I'd FINALLY get to come down those stairs. Naturally, I'd dash over and tear into the pile of presents:D
After that we'd bundle up in blankets and drive over to their house for yet another Christmas - Who'd have thought Santa delivered twice? I'd rip those packages open and papa would put my toys together while I got trussed up in a frilly, velvet Christmas dress and proceeded to play like the tomboy I was - while my grandmother fixed a big Christmas dinner.
My grandparents are gone now but we share a lot of other Christmas traditions and this year I have my new niece to share them with. We still sit down in the living room every Christmas Eve and listen to mom read us the Night Before Christmas. A few years ago my sister and I bought her a brand new book with a hard cover - Now, every year we write her a new message in it for Christmas.
One I can't wait to start with my niece - when my sister was little (there are 9 years between us) she and I would go out and throw reindeer food on the ground (oats and glitter) I'd wait until she went to sleep and sneak back out in the cold and if there was snow I'd scatter it and poke sticks in the ground to make it look like reindeer feet. It took a little extra effort if there was just grass but I usually succeeded. First thing she did was run to the door to see if the reindeer had got full.
Speaking of full - a couple years ago mom laid out cookies and coke for Santa - just for the heck of it and was very shocked the next morning to find that two of her little elves had snuck out in the middle of the night - giggling all the way - and ate them! Yes, we leave cookies for the heck of it too;)
