Right now, even as defenseless harp seal pups nurse from their mothers, sealers are preparing their boats for the 2009 Canadian commercial seal slaughter.
But there is hope on the horizon. We are very close to a victory that could save hundreds of thousands of seals from a horrible fate.
How close? Next month, the European Union will consider banning its trade in seal products, closing the doors on one of the largest markets for seal fur. We've reached a critical tipping point, and we must keep the momentum going before this year's kill begins. You've done so much before -- here's what you can do right now to help seal the deal and end the hunt:
Ask your friends and family to join you in signing the pledge to boycott Canadian seafood until the hunt ends. Our goal is to reach 1,000,000 signatures -- we've already gathered more than 630,000 signatures, and if everyone who sees this email tells 5 friends, we'll reach our goal overnight.
Tell Clearwater -- one of the largest exporters of seafood from the sealing provinces -- that you will be boycotting Canadian seafood until seals are safe. Clearwater has the power to help convince the Canadian government to stop this slaughter forever.
Two things will end the hunt forever: Shutting down markets for seal fur and hitting the Canadian seafood industry where it hurts most -- its bottom line. You've brought us closer than ever to reaching these goals, and your renewed commitment to ending the hunt will make victory possible at last.
